What Should We Wear During Our Photoshoot?
Most mothers that purchase family portraits look to me for advice on what their families should wear during their session. Your wardrobe will come together easily with a few simple tips.
Since we’re offering our Fall Family Portrait special this year, we’ll use Autumn an example:
Compliment the Background
The Smith family has decided to have their pictures taken in their backyard which has lots of trees and grass that will be orange and red during the session. Since the Smiths want to showcase the gorgeous landscape as well as themselves, the colors and textures each person chooses to wear should compliment the background and not detract from it. Choose articles of clothing that have rich, warm tones and avoid busy prints and very thin stripes.
Do you need to match? Absolutely not! It is important that you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing and it’s even a plus to have each person’s outfit showcase a little bit of their unique personality.
Scheduling a session near your home comes with the added bonus of wardrobe changes. For most sessions Fresca allows up to three outfit swaps for a greater variety of portraits. And no matter where we shoot, accessory changes like sweaters & scarves is always an option!
The example above is of a family who made especially good use of color. The shoot took place in October, so they wore warm tones. If you look closely, you’ll also notice their son’s shirt pulls in orange from mom shirt and blue from dad’s.
Imagine the Product
It’s important to imagine your finished product. Are your photos going to be blown up and showcased in your foyer or are they going to be used for your holiday cards? It’s imperative to share this information with your photographer. If it’s a showcase piece you’re after, we can help you pick a wardrobe that compliments your existing decor. If it’s a yearly holiday card that you’re trying to design, we’ll choose outfit that fits in perfectly with the occasion.
A Final Tip
Always make sure the wardrobe selections are clean and ironed. While a little spit-up sometimes happens and can be edited out easily, removing wrinkles is an entirely different story! Unless you are looking for a worn-in look, make sure dresses and shirts are pressed. If necessary bring wrinkle releaser for touch-ups on site.
I got to hang out with Altan for the second time this year and we had a blast! Never underestimate the power of a 6-month-old’s fascination or the imagination they can bring to the most ordinary everyday items – like a simple white bucket!
This family won a portrait session through a silent auction last year. Mom and Dad were expecting their little one in February, so they decided to wait for their new arrival before using their prize!
They just moved into a big home on a gorgeous estate and the views were spectacular. Across the street they even had a weeping willow (one of the best backdrops!) and around the corner was a long row of gargantuan trees. There are so many more shots to share, but I had to get a sneak peek in since I still have plenty of photos to process!
Who says boys have more energy? I got together with this big family (mom, dad, grandma, grandpa and the two girls) for an afternoon playing in the yard and jumping on the bed. Kind of like a play date for kids AND adults!
A favorite from one of my sessions over the weekend. A super loving family in a big, beautiful neighborhood!
These two ladies, by request of their mother, met me for a family photo session a few Saturdays ago. The special twist? The photos were for their father, a surprise gift for his birthday. Mom decided a professional portrait session and prints would be perfect since they both left college, started careers and moved away. (Surely would have made a fantastic Father’s Day gift too!)
We wrapped up a homemade gift certificate for him to choose his favorites from an online gallery, and the prints shipped right to his door… a fun, unique, interactive gift!
I know this family well and adore them! If you can’t tell, these photos were taken last November, at a log cabin out in the country. Nothing like a brisk November day to get the kids moving and playing!
I just love it when newborns smile! Nolan and his beautiful family let me into their home on a warm weekend morning (the first of hopefully many) so we ventured outside and spent a little time in their woodsy, pretty backyard. Afterward we moved inside where he lulled himself to sleep in one of my cute homemade caps, ignoring the clickclickclick of my camera. Photographers should be so lucky to have this little guy as a model!
I mainly shoot in color. Vibrant, fresh, fun photos are what I’m all about! But sometimes black and white just captures the essence of the moment, and color dilutes the sensation. I had the opportunity to join a family for a surprise 60th birthday party last weekend and this was one of those moments. Black and white won me over in a major way!
