What Should We Wear?: New England Family Photographer

What Should We Wear During Our Photoshoot?
Most mothers that purchase family portraits look to me for advice on what their families should wear during their session. Your wardrobe will come together easily with a few simple tips.

Since we’re offering our Fall Family Portrait special this year, we’ll use Autumn an example:

Compliment the Background
The Smith family has decided to have their pictures taken in their backyard which has lots of trees and grass that will be orange and red during the session. Since the Smiths want to showcase the gorgeous landscape as well as themselves, the colors and textures each person chooses to wear should compliment the background and not detract from it. Choose articles of clothing that have rich, warm tones and avoid busy prints and very thin stripes.

Matchy-Matchy
Do you need to match? Absolutely not! It is important that you’re comfortable in what you’re wearing and it’s even a plus to have each person’s outfit showcase a little bit of their unique personality.

Variety
Scheduling a session near your home comes with the added bonus of wardrobe changes. For most sessions Fresca allows up to three outfit swaps for a greater variety of portraits. And no matter where we shoot, accessory changes like sweaters & scarves is always an option!

The example above is of a family who made especially good use of color. The shoot took place in October, so they wore warm tones. If you look closely, you’ll also notice their son’s shirt pulls in orange from mom shirt and blue from dad’s.

Imagine the Product
It’s important to imagine your finished product. Are your photos going to be blown up and showcased in your foyer or are they going to be used for your holiday cards? It’s imperative to share this information with your photographer. If it’s a showcase piece you’re after, we can help you pick a wardrobe that compliments your existing decor. If it’s a yearly holiday card that you’re trying to design, we’ll choose outfit that fits in perfectly with the occasion.

A Final Tip
Always make sure the wardrobe selections are clean and ironed. While a little spit-up sometimes happens and can be edited out easily, removing wrinkles is an entirely different story! Unless you are looking for a worn-in look, make sure dresses and shirts are pressed. If necessary bring wrinkle releaser for touch-ups on site.

Erin & Neil: Washington DC Engagement Photography

December 2, 2011  |  couples

We’ve had the pleasure of knowing Erin and Neil for quite some time and we were happy to hear they got engaged last year! They are a delightful (and gorgeous) couple who met in Dartmouth and plan to wed across the country in beautiful California.

We spent an early morning together at a sweet, secluded spot in DC that Fresca Photo had never been to before, even after six years of living in the area! (Can you guess the location?) It’s another one of our new favorites and we’re so happy it helped us create lovely photos for the couple to remember and use to announce their wedding day.

Naomi: 2012 Senior Model and Rep

November 28, 2011  |  seniors

Naomi, one of our Senior Reps and official 2012 models, found a spectacular spot for her high school senior photo shoot – at a huge reservoir park in Holyoke, Massachusetts that features open fields, a long land bridge over water, and lots of foliage and trees. The sun was beginning to set and we trekked out to a few different gorgeous stops over a handful of miles.

Naomi possesses an extremely confident yet unpretentious quality that shines in her images. She is intelligent and caring and was one of the most relaxed subjects we’ve ever photographed. We captured her affinity for country music and worked with the delicious sunlight behind her to highlight her naturally beautiful curly hair.

Here’s hoping more senior portrait sessions are as easy as this one!

Thanksgiving Treat: New England Food Photography

November 23, 2011  |  food

Happy early Thanksgiving!

It’s time to get with family, share some laughs, and cook till the turkey’s done! To celebrate this delicious holiday, we decided to share a recipe we re-created from a post found on Pinterest (originally from this blog). It’s orangy-vanilla goodness, wrapped in a warm, lightly crusty pound cake and definitely worth a shot this winter. We loved reheating it in the toaster oven on broil, with a little slab of butter on the side.

Ingredients
1 stick butter, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
2 navel oranges, zested and juiced
1 container (6 oz) plain, nonfat greek yogurt
1 vanilla bean

Size Matters: Boston Massachusetts Photography

November 16, 2011  |  products

If you’ve decided to spend time and money on having professional photos taken of you or your family, then at some point you are going to need to choose how to show off your beautiful new images. It’s important to remember that size matters! While small prints are perfect for sharing and gifting to family and friends, showcasing them in your home is another story. If you’re planning on showcasing just one, bigger is usually better. Would you rather stay small? Clustering is key; and your photographer will have hopefully taken a few that work very well as a set. See below for an example. (The images on the dresser are 5×7 prints.)

1 – A lone, 20×20 standout print. Eye-catching because of it’s square cropping and size.
2 – A lone, 11×14 standout print. Next to the items on the dresser, it gets a little lost on the wall.
3 – Two 11×14 standout prints, working well as a pair. Add two more for a staggered set. Four squares would look great too.
4 – Two different sized standouts. Line up the edges for a more symmetrical layout.

If you are working with Fresca Photo, we will happily take a look at your home for perfect spots to place your images and even put together different design packages for you to choose from!

Photo Tips: New England Portrait Photographer

October 28, 2011  |  portraits, tips

We’ve been getting quite a few questions lately about how we create some of our images, which is a huge compliment. (Thank you!) Going forward we’ll post regular blog behind-the-scenes entries.

Below is from an engagement session held this past weekend in Washington D.C. This image was shot on a bridge facing the water. Believe it or not, the image came out soft and dreamy straight out of the camera because we faced the sun, which added the pretty lens flare above and below Erin and Neil. The couple was intentionally kept slightly out of focus, a light rosy wash was added during post-processing, and we also cleaned up some stray hairs and added a little extra contrast.
